We are expecting a baby!!

Well folks, I have some rather exciting news today – my wife and I are expecting our first baby!

I was sitting watching TV when I heard my wife shout through “James, can you come here?”. I went through to the bathroom and found my wife holding and staring at a pregnancy test. She showed me the little screen on it, which read “Pregnant”.

We both looked at each other in silence, neither of us quite believing what we were looking at. “Oh my god”, “Holy Sh*t”, “we’re having a baby”.

I said we should not get too excited just yet, these tests are “only” about 99.99% accurate, we need another positive test to tell us for sure. But we didn’t have any more tests. I jumped in the car and rushed to the nearest shop, cleared the shelf of all the pregnancy tests they had and got back to the house.

The second test was positive. And the third. We are definitely having a baby.

I still cannot quite put into words how excited I am. partly because it hasn’t quite sunk in yet, and partly because there are no words to describe this unique blend of excitement, apprehention and about a million other emotions too.

I’ve heard most people wait until they’ve had the 12 weeks scan before telling anyone, just in case anything goes wrong, but there was no way we were keeping this to ourselves.

We went straight to my in-laws, then my parents, to tell them the good news. It’s the first grandchild for both sides of the family, so there was a lot of excitement when we told them. Tears, laughs, smiles, hugs and kisses.

We are back home now, me, my wife, our dog and the bump.

It still feels completely surreal. I can’t believe I’m going to be a dad.

The next step now is to wait until our 12 week scan. We phoned the hospital, as I assumed we needed to go to a widwife or doctor to get checked, but they just took our word for it and booked us in for an appointment. My wife spoke to the midwife and they somehow calculated she was 4 weeks gone. This is going to be a long 8 weeks until the scan!
